How did manifest destiny in combination with slavery issue contribute to session and civil war?

1. Manifest destiny led to a showdown over slavery because each state that entered the Union shifted the balance of power. There was always a negociation over whether the state would enter as slave or free.
2. The original issue that started the Civil War was states' rights and whether a state could secede. Originally, Lincoln was willing to let slavery continues as long as it didn't expand. Only later did the war become about slavery.
