How long does each nursing session last for you?

When i breastfeed my baby its' between 5 to 30 minutes each session. I breastfeed her sometimes every 3 or 4 hours. Is this fine? Is 3 or 4 hours too much in between nursing? I only breastfeed her. i breastfeed her between 8-10 times in 24 hours.

Anyway, how is your breastfeeding?|||That actually sounds perfect!!

As she gets older she may become a faster/more efficient eater and the times will decrease.. but you should be able to tell by her cures that she is still getting enough. .|||Every baby is different. I think though, that the baby will let you know when she's done because she'll pull off the nipple. At least that's how it works with my own baby.

Also, if your baby seems to be fine with feeding every 3-4 hours and is gaining weight just fine, then that schedule works for you. No need to question it.

As said though, each baby is different. My own is a "snacker" and has wanted to eat every 1 1/2-2 hours since birth. She'll only ever eat for a maximum of 15 minutes though. Some babies like to "graze" and eat for longer periods.|||I've had one that nursed 2-3 times an hour and one that would only nurse 6-7 times a day the first 4 months.

Some women can't maintain a milk supply only nursing every 3-4 hours. And some babies don't get enough nursing that often. But if your baby is gaining enough weight then its fine. On demand means on demand, its only when you force a baby to go longer between feeds that you cause problems.

Normal Breastfeeding Patterns After Eight Weeks:

The following suggestions are "average" recommendations - keep in mind there is no "one size fits all" for nursing frequency. Some babies have predictable patterns, others nurse on irregular pattern. Some mom/baby pairs can go longer than others between nursing sessions depending on mom's storage capacity. A mom with larger storage capacity might note that her baby goes longer between feedings, and a mom with smaller storage capacity might note her baby nurses more often. (Remember, storage capacity is not related to breast size.) It is helpful to keep note of baby's weight gain and elimination patterns when "judging" whether or not baby is nursing enough

From eight weeks (2 months) to a year, here are suggested minimum number of times a breastfed baby should be nursing, in a 24 hr span:

From 2 - 4 months baby should nurse at least 6 times in 24 hr period

From 4 - 7 months baby should nurse at least 5 times in 24 hr period

From 7 - 12 months baby should nurse at least 4 times in 24 hr period

Growth spurts will likely occur at around 10 days, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, again at 6 months, at 9 months and again around a year. Increased nursing can also be the result of the approach of a new developmental stage, illness, teething, or a result of change or usual routine, or increased stress or activity at home

Some mothers become concerned if baby begins to nurse in very short sessions. Most breastfeeding experts advise that if the baby continues to have plenty of wet diapers, regular bowel movements, is gaining weight well and meeting developmental milestones, then baby is getting enough breastmilk. Even sessions as short as five minutes can be normal, as long as baby continues to grow and do well.|||That sounds perfectly fine. 8-10 times per day is average and every 3-4 hours is actually a nice break. Some moms nurse every 2 hours.

My daughter had a varied nursing length. Sometimes it was 10min, and sometimes she'd nurse forever, like 30-45min and drift off asleep. At that age babies will change their nursing patterns often so don't let it worry you. Just as long as the diaper output is ok and weight gain is good they are fine. Breastfed babies control what they eat and can't overfeed.

She is 9 months old now and nurses every few hours sometimes for just a few minutes. If it is her nap nurse she'll nurse for quite a while but usually she just spuratically nurses off and on for an hour, like whens he feels like grabbing a little to munch on lol|||my second born is also 2 1/2 months well on Sunday he'll be 12 weeks...

He has a similar nursing pattern to your baby... He usually nurses fir 5-10 minutes every 2-4 hours except at nap and bedtime when we lay together he nurses for 30-60 minutes mostly in his sleep. And of and on throughout the night

My first born was a snacker... Every 45-90 minutes and constantly throughout naptime and bedtime... He liked to suck.

Every child is different.... As long as gaining well, content at the breast, pees alot and has dirty diapers.... You are fine|||my baby is 5 months old and a guzzler! Most sessions are 10 minutes (5 on each side) every three hours, but he sleeps most of the night so he typically only has 5 or 6 sessions. The session right before bed is typically the longest at about 20 minutes. It sounds like you are feeding your baby plenty! When my son was 2 1/2 months old, he started sleeping through the night, so we still had only about 6 sessions a day...|||That sounds great! Lucky you to get a break like that in between feedings!! I breastfed my son until he was 9 weeks old (Wasn't producing enough for all you BF nazi's out there) and he would feed for about half an hour, every hour. It was exhausting! (Until I found out the problem was I was not producing enough)|||my son is 7 months old and i breastfeed him about as much and as long as you only the sessions can sometimes last up to an hour. i think its cuz he's a boy tho. it goes good tho. and i enjoy it.|||sounds fine.

Mine normally nurses between 5 and 15 minutes. :) he's 3 months old.
