What do we do at our first tutoring session?

I am going to tutor an 8th grader in writing. His parents say his writing is horrible, his essays make no sense, and his sentences run on and on. They feel as though he does think as he's reading the assignment/instructions for the essay. What should I do during our first session to get an idea of what he needs to work on?|||Go through the basics, ask him what a verb is, a noun, an adjective, an article, a preposition and give him examples of each in a sentence. Give him a few sentences and ask him what the subject of that sentence is. This will be enough for even an hour lesson. Try to make the sentences funny or interesting to him (like about cars).

Take mental note while you work with the boy, and when you get home jot everything down and reflect. See where his weaknesses were and then work on those. Also, remember to tell him that he's improving-when he does. Kids need to hear that.

If he seems to be fine with all of that or the large majority then your bigger problem could be reading comprehension. In that case you read to him and have his parents read for homework and stop every so often to ask questions.|||Come up with a writing topic. Have him write about the topic. Check to see if he has read the topic/instructions for the essay and his writing. Just let him write do not stop him. At the end, grade it. Discuss the good and bad with the student and parents. :)
